What made you want to be an artist?
I was born into a very artistic home. My parents are both actors, and their friends were actors, artists and musicians.
From a young age, I was in awe of how these people could communicate the visceral and intimate in an engaging and profound way. It is something which stuck with me and today I am so grateful that my art, particularly my music, allows me to communicate in a way that feels like an true extension of my inner-self.
What inspires your to write and perform your own songs?
There is something deep within me which drives my music and puts rhythm and words to my feelings. It makes songwriting and performing so cathartic because I can voice emotions which I would otherwise find difficult to express.
My songs are all true to my own experience, they are emotionally driven, authentic, but also relatable – they touch on things which we can all go through. I really want my music to connect with people wherever they’re from in the world.
Tell us about your new songs and what they mean to you?
I’ve been writing for so long that I can track how I have developed as a person through my songs, which is always fun! From teenage angst to intense relationships – I can relive it all through my music.
The new songs represent a big change for me. They are an incredibly honest exploration of themes such as the deconstruction of my inner personalities, identity, sobriety, my relationship to art and fame and what all these things mean to me today.
What is your favorite city to perform in?
I love to perform everywhere in the world. Each audience brings a vibe and energy that’s completely different.
I just did my first performance in London at Soho House. The audience didn’t know me or any of my work and that anonymity was so exciting and rewarding.
I also love performing in India and giving something new to an audience that is so familiar with me from my movies.
Some artists bring a level of thought, attention and truth to their work which takes them to the next level. My icons are people like Tori Amos, Trent Reznor, Fiona Apple, Kurt Cobain, The Beatles and A R Rahman.
Butterfly by Crazy Town. it reminds of being fifteen and carefree.
Dream concert ticket (any band, any decade)?
There isn’t much I wouldn’t do for the chance to see the Beatles live.
Definitely! I adore GOT and Black Mirror, I also binged on the Haunting of Hill House on the plane to LA and I think I freaked out most of the other passengers.
Last fashion item purchased?
A pair of gothic, velvet-laced, black Alexander McQueen boots.
Three people—dead or alive, real or fictional—that you’d like to invite to dinner?
Frida Kahlo, Edgar Alan Poe, John Lennon
Do you have a party trick?
I can cut a lemon with a piece of paper…
Tell us a secret/ fun fact about yourself?
I like to make dinosaur noises in the morning.
What does popular mean to you?
Popular means love, fun and positivity
Can you tell us about any shows or projects you have coming up?
Right now in India, I’m filming my own talk show and shooting two films. My first English album is out early next year, which I am working on with some amazing people in London and I have a load of gigs lined up over there too. I also have a couple of things on the acting side in the US too, but I am keeping quiet on that for now.
I feel so blessed to be able to do the things which I love every day, all around the world :)
